I stood up.
“Why is this so important to you?”
He said nothing.
Then he picked up his own glass, drank it in one swallow, and walked out of the kitchen. I barely slept that night. One thought had entered my mind, and I couldn’t get rid of it.
Why had he been so frightened when I refused to drink?
The next morning, after George left the house, I went back into the kitchen.
My glass was still sitting on the table.
I carefully poured the remaining liquid into a small clean container.
And for the first time in forty years, I decided to find out exactly what I had
been drinking.
At the laboratory, they looked at me strangely.
I simply told them that I wanted the liquid analyzed.
Two days later, I received a phone call.
“Mrs. Miller, could you come in personally?”
I didn’t like the tone of the doctor’s voice.
